In Saint-Jeannet, a small village in the heights of Nice, is a family-owned wine estate. Here you can experience an afternoon like a professional winemaker.
It is a true love story that begins between the village of Saint-Jeannet and the cultivation of grapes under the Roman Empire. At that time, mainly table grapes were grown there. Grapes that were not good enough to sell were turned into wine. This wine was low in alcohol and kept very poorly. It was consumed by men of strength throughout the day. One day, a merry roofer forgot his Lady Jeanne carboy full of the precious liquid on the roof. He found it a few months later and tasted the wine, which had improved thanks to the sun.
This unique method of wine maturation has been handed down to this day. Once vinification is finished in the winery, the Dame Jeanne demijohns are placed in the sun to give the wine its unique specificities. The vineyard is cultivated with care and the utmost respect for nature. Harvesting is still done by hand.
You will visit a tranquil landscape steeped in vineyards and olive trees and with breathtaking views of the French Riviera and the Mediterranean. You will be able, for an afternoon, to learn about the winemaker’s craft: an introduction to the tiled wine-making technique and a tasting in the vineyards will allow you to appreciate this idyllic setting. During harvest season you will certainly be able to pick the grapes, but also “track” them, that is, get into the vat and press the grapes as they used to be done in the old days.
