For the first time in its history, the French stage race will not arrive in Paris, but will end on the French Riviera, with a time trial that could decide the eventual winner.
The last two stages will both be on Nice soil and promise spectacle and suspense. The penultimate stage will be a mountain patrol with four challenging climbs, while the last stage will be a 35-kilometer time trial starting in Monaco and finishing in Place Massena.
The Tour de France 2024 will be remembered as one of the most original and spectacular editions in the history of the race. For the first time since 1905, in fact, the Grande Boucle will not end in Paris, but in Nice, on the French Riviera. The reason for this choice is related to the concomitance with the preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will take place from July 26 to August 11.
The last two stages of the Tour de France 2024 will both be in Nice, but with very different characteristics. The penultimate stage on Saturday, July 20, will be a 132-kilometer mountain stage with four challenging climbs: the Col de Braus, the Col de Turini, the Col de la Colmiane and the Col de la Couillole, where the final finish will be located. This is a course that could decide the fate of the overall classification, with more than 4,500 meters of total elevation gain.
The final stage, on Sunday, July 21, will instead be a 35.2-kilometer individual time trial, starting in Monaco and finishing at Place Massena in Nice. The riders will face two climbs, La Turbie and the Col d’Eze, before descending to the sea and the Promenade des Anglais. It will be the first time the Tour will end with a time trial since the legendary 1989, when Laurent Fignon lost the yellow jersey by eight seconds to Greg Lemond.
The Tour de France 2024 thus promises strong emotions and uncertainty to the last meter. Nice is preparing to welcome this historic event with enthusiasm and pride. Mayor Christian Estrosi said, “We are honored to host the arrival of the Tour de France 2024. It is a unique opportunity to enhance our territory and our passion for cycling.”
